Policy on AI-Generated Text & Generative AI Tools

  1. Authorship Criteria & AI Tools

In accordance with COPE and ICMJE guidelines, Large Language Models (LLMs), AI chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini), and generative AI software do not meet the criteria for authorship.

  • AI tools cannot take responsibility or be held accountable for the scientific integrity, accuracy, or original content of a manuscript.
  • AI tools cannot manage conflict of interest disclosures, grant permissions, or sign copyright agreements.
  • AI software must never be listed as an author or co-author on any submission.
  1. Permissible Use of AI

Authors are permitted to use generative AI tools solely for copyediting, language polishing, and structural formatting (e.g., improving grammar, syntax, readability, or translation).

Any use of AI tools must comply with the following conditions:

  • Human Oversight: Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for all content, including factual accuracy, references, data interpretation, and potential plagiarism generated by AI tools.
  • Data Integrity: AI tools must not be used to generate, alter, fabricate, or manipulate raw research data, scientific figures, clinical images, or primary findings.
  1. Mandatory Disclosure Statement

If AI tools or AI-assisted technologies were utilized in writing, editing, or data collection for the manuscript, authors must explicitly declare their use upon submission.

A dedicated "AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Statement" must be included prior to the References section, following this format:

AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Disclosure: "During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [Name of Tool/Service] in order to [Reason for Use, e.g., improve English grammar and phrasing]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and took(s) full responsibility for the content of the published article."

(If no AI tools were used during manuscript preparation, no statement is required.)

  1. Editorial & Peer Review Protocol
  • Reviewer Restrictions: Peer reviewers are strictly prohibited from uploading confidential manuscripts, drafting text, or author data into unvetted public AI tools or models, as doing so violates author confidentiality and data privacy rights.
  • AI Screening: MTJ reserves the right to apply AI-generated text detection tools during editorial pre-screening to verify manuscript originality and integrity.
